TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — State court officials say they are unsure whether a Kansas budget approved this year by the Legislature will allow them to avoid furloughs for employees.
Lawmakers passed a budget that makes up $2 million of an $8.25 million shortfall for the courts. Extra filing fees also were approved, and supporters said those fees are expected to generate $4 million to $6.2 million during the fiscal year.
The Wichita Eagle reports the first $3.1 million of the extra fee revenue will go to a new electronic filing system, not toward reducing the shortfall.
Lisa Taylor, spokeswoman for the Kansas Supreme Court, says no one knows how much money the increased courts fees will bring in, so it’s unclear if furloughs will be needed.
