LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — The city of Lee’s Summit welcomed the crowds Thursday evening to its Independence Day celebration at Legacy Park.

The event is scheduled the day before the holiday to allow police officers to be back on the streets when they are needed on July 4.

Thursday afternoon, nearly 30 officers and first responders met at the command post at the Legacy Park Community Center to go over plans and tactics to keep the celebratory crowd safe.

“They help us with traffic and patron control and our safety. We have our fire and our EMS crews out here to keep everybody safe so we don`t want to take away from the rest of the community of the fourth of July,” said Jodi Bell, with Legacy Park Community Center.

The gates opened at 6 p.m. and fireworks were set for 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 3.
