LENEXA, Kan. — A Lenexa man wants to make it big as a race car driver, and his big break may be right around the corner. A contest by PEAK may give him the chance to live out his NASCAR dreams.
Will Wolf has been racing cars since he was a little boy, and recently he’s been selected for a national competition which could end up being his big break.
“That feeling you get when you’re in the car, everything just goes away,” said Wolf, who started began racing in go-karts at age five.
“He just always wanted to be around cars and things that were mechanical and he was always racing something,” said his dad, Steve.
Wolf is a third generation driver. His dad and his grandpa raced before him. Steve says he knew Wolf would follow in their footsteps partly because of tradition, but more so because of skill.
“He was very fast, and he is a natural behind the wheel no matter what he gets behind,” added Steve.
His dad might be on to something. Wolf recently won a spot in a national contest.
“It feels good, it puts a little bit of pressure on me,” said Wolf.
Wolf was one of thousands who submitted videos to enter the PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge. Anyone can vote for the top five, and PEAK chooses 13 more, taking all 18 contestants to North Carolina for three days.
“I’ve been working for this break, and this will be my break if I can make this happen and capitalize on it and show, it will be my chance to break into NASCAR,” said Wolf.
If Wolf proves himself in this competition, he’ll get the chance to win a PEAK racing sponsorship in a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race, and will be one step closer to his dream of becoming a NASCAR driver.
“They put you through a bunch of tests and try and figure out who is the best driver, and the best driver out of that they choose will become a PEAK sponsored driver for Michael Waltrip Racing,” said Wolf.
The contest judges and coaches are some of the top drivers in the sport, including Emporia, Kansas native Clint Bowyer.
Wolf has been preparing over the last few weeks and leaves for the competition on June 5.
