Local bakery pumps out hundreds of Royals cookies per day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A lot of baseball fans will be gathering at homes and parties Tuesday to watch Game Six of the World Series.

And many will be eating some special KC cookies and cupcakes at those watch parties. At McClain’s Bakery in Waldo, workers say they can’t crank out the KC logoed desserts fast enough.

“I saw them last week when I came in and I just thought they were adorable and a fun way to show your support,” said Alyssa Pressley, who purchased half a dozen Royals cookies.

You take an ordinary sugar cookie and ice it up with a blue KC logo, and suddenly you’ve got the hottest dessert in the metro area that everybody wants to eat.

Customers have been lining up for Royals cookies all month long. It started just before the Wild Card game when a special order came in for Royals logo cookies. The bakery put some extras in its display case and they were quickly snapped up. Since then it’s literally been non-stop baking, with this shop selling 55 dozen, that’s 660 Royals cookies, in just one day alone.

“That was insane,” said Amy Berlau, pastry chef at McClain’s. “We were blindsided. It was just constant scooping, baking, icing. We really did not expect it at all. It was really quite nice, but it was very unexpected.”

A lot of people will be gathering together Tuesday night to watch the big game, and they say the experience would not be complete without some KC cookies.

The run has been good for workers at the bakery, who say they’ve had a tough time keeping up with demand, but also say it’s nice to be part of the excitement in the city.

The cookies cost $2 apiece, and though the bakery has also added cakes and cupcakes with Royals logos, the cookies remain far and away their biggest seller.
