ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A St. Louis man is accused of hijacking a horse-drawn carriage and assaulting the driver and horse on Tuesday in St. Louis.
Police arrested Johnny Medina, 40, for his alleged horse jacking. According to KTVI, Medina jumped onto the carriage during as the driver was returning to the barn after a night of work. Police said Medina hit the 60-year-old driver in the head with a cane, breaking it. The driver jumped out of the carriage and Medina took the reins. The horse, named Harry, reportedly sensed something was wrong and began galloping through the streets of downtown St. Louis near Busch Stadium.
At one point part of the carriage smashed into a trolley car. Medina then reportedly jumped out of the carriage and began beating the horse. The driver of the trolley car quickly tried to intervene, positioning himself between Medina and the horse. The commotion caught the attention of other people in the area who moved in and subdued Medina.
He has been charged with second degree robbery and third degree assault and is being held on $30,000 cash-only bond.
The horse did not have any visible injuries and is expected to be okay, as is his carriage driver.
