Police capture escaped inmate being transported to Jackson Co. correctional facility

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Independence police say a man who escaped from police custody earlier Tuesday was apprehended around 4 p.m.

On Tuesday the Independence Police Department confirmed that Darrell E. Hunter, 50, was the man who had escaped from police. He was caught by authorities about an hour and a half later.

Hunter has been in jail on a felony charge of theft/stealing in connection to an incident which occurred on December 1 of last year.

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday police said a white male in his 50’s, described as “skinny” and wearing a plaid shirt, blue jeans and a pair of handcuffs, who was later identified by police as Hunter, escape from police custody as he was being transported to the Jackson County Correctional Facility in KCMO. At the time police and K-9 officers conducted a search for him on foot.
