MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. — Authorities say that a man is dead following a crash in rural Miami County early Wednesday morning.

According to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of Mission Road and 223rd Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. in regard to a pickup truck reported to be in a ditch. Authorities say the caller reported that the truck’s driver was intoxicated and was trying to free the truck from the ditch.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found no one in the area. About 45 minutes later, emergency units were dispatched to the area of Mission Road and 231st – about a mile south of the original call – on a report of an injury accident involving a pickup truck.

Authorities at the scene say that a 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck was southbound and drove through a T-intersection, and collided with a ditch embankment on the south side of 231st Street. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as 31-year-old Anthony Bowers of Cleveland, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to sheriff’s deputies, Bowers was not wearing a seatbelt. The accident is still under investigation, but authorities say that the truck matches the description of the vehicle in the initial report of a vehicle in a ditch.
