JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — The man who stole a Fed-Ex truck and took it for a spin has been ‘delivered’ to a courtroom on Thursday.
A judged sentence Caleb Ownby, 19, for his Dec. 4 joyride to one year in jail and 24 months probation. Ownby will be extradited to two other counties where he will go before judges who will decide if he will serve his sentence concurrently or consecutively.
According to police, back on Wednesday, Dec. 4, a FedEx driver left her keys in a delivery truck to go inside a gas station. When she returned, the truck had been stolen. It wasn’t seen by law enforcement until about 4 p.m. Within that seven-hour period, Ownby reportedly dropped off some of the packages at his mother’s house, where he’s not allowed to stay according to a probable cause statement.
The truck was eventually located after 4 p.m. traveling near Bannister and Bales when police initiated their pursuit. The chase appeared to be over when the truck was stopped at a red light at Blue Parkway and Elmwood. Officers made contact and ordered Ownby out of the vehicle, but he sped away after an officer had opened the door.
After trying to use stop sticks at multiple locations, a flat tire disabled the truck and came to a stop west of Belinder on 71st street in Prairie Village, Kan. Ownby was then taken into police custody.
He made his initial appearance in Johnson County court on Thursday and is being held in jail on $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on next Thursday.
