KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Mayor Sly James invited the people of Kansas City to a block party. Sly’s Rock the Block was held on Saturday night near Volker & Troost.
The party took three months of planning by the City of Kansas City Missouri.
“It’s actually really nice,” said KC resident Gayle Price. “I enjoyed the kids dancing and the kids were in the bouncy house, my husband is in line getting food. It’s really nice.”
Saturday’s party was the first of its kind. It turns out the party was a way to say thank you to Kansas City teens.
“We wanted to end the summer for the youth in the city with something that would be a fitting close for it,” said KC Mayor Sly James.
When the curfew in Kansas City went into effect in June, 2012, the city came up with Club KC. It was a place for teens to hang out, have fun with friends and stay safe. The mayor says teens did a good job respecting the rules at Club KC. The block party turned into a way to say thanks.
“The bottom line is a lot of people have to take credit, we achieved the goal of providing a safe place for our youth to be and fortunately they were entertained,” said Mayor James. “We want to make sure the kids know we are trying to do all we can for them.”
There is already talk of bringing the event back next year.
