KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Get behind the wheel in Missouri and you’re likely to experience inattentive drivers. Maybe you’re one of them.
According to USA Today, a survey from CarInsuranceComparison.com has listed Missouri among the states with the worst drivers. To reach these findings, the website tallies fatality rates per 100 million miles traveled. The site also look at traffic citations for failure to yield traffic signals, seat belts, DUIs and other traffic offenses. They get their information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association and Mother Against Drunk Driving.
Among the states with the worst drivers, Missouri ranked seventh, tying with North Carolina. The No. 1 state turned out to be Louisiana.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation’s website, 826 people died on Missouri roads in 2012. Since 2005, when 1,257 people died on Missouri roads, a total of 7,616 people have lost their lives.
MoDOT reports that 69 percent of those fatalities were people who were not wearing their seatbelts.
