KANSAS CITY, Mo. — You can make a Mother’s Day contribution by helping moms in need around the metro provide for their children. Happy Bottoms says they’re having a hard time keeping up with the growing demand for diapers.
Courtney Chapman is spending the first moments of her first Mother’s Day donating diapers.
“I wanted to help out because with my pregnancy lots of people helped out it was a big help,” Chapman said. “I know how expensive things are and i just wanted to help out and give to someone who is less fortunate.”
There are so many who need diapers in the metro. Happy Bottoms distributes through 16 Kansas City agencies serving about 800 children a month which is really just scratching the surface.
The Head Start Program is just one place they are making a difference.
“We serve kids six weeks to three years every day,” said Heather Gilliam. “We go through a lot of diapers. If we didn’t have the diapers donated we would have to cut the funding to our supply budget.”
Happy Bottoms also donates to local programs that help victims of domestic violence and homeless women who would otherwise make do.
“If you don’t have a diaper you will use what’s available,” said Liz Sutherlin. “They will take t-shirts and duck tape around the baby and that becomes a disposable diaper.”
Happy Bottoms is trying to collect 250,000 diapers next week. They will take new or even partially used bags and boxes and put them to good use.
“You can honor your mom by making a donation,” Sutherlin said. “We will put her name on the website and you are donating to a mom who doesn’t have diapers for a family and we can make money go a long way in getting these diapers.”
