KANSAS CITY, Mo. — City budget cuts could be hitting the Kansas City Police Department where it really hurts — in the building of a state-of-the-art crime lab.

The lab is set to be built at 27th and Prospect but may now be smaller than originally planned because of the cuts.

City officials told police board members they simply can’t afford the $40 million project and instead want to cut it down to $19 million.

Those cuts would reduce the size of the lab, the number of new employees and cut out possibilities of cutting edge equipment.

The lab will focus on delivering basic services instead of trying to solve the hundreds of backlogged cases.

The police board tabled the new plan for one month to investigate other options.
