KANSAS CITY, Mo. – “My heart was just racing, and I was scared. You don’t like to see your baby get hit,” Helen Byrd said.
Helen Byrd watched Monday morning as her nine-year-old daughter, Breanna, crossed the street near James Elementary School, at the 100 block of North Topping in Kansas City, Mo.
Helen said she watched as a vehicle hit Breanna.
“I could feel my belly, it was like I was about to throw up,” Breanna described the way being hit felt.
Helen said she immediately got out of her car and ran to Breanna and yelled at the woman who she says hit her.
“I started screaming at the lady, ‘You hit my kid! You hit my kid!” Helen said.
She said she told the driver she was calling the police and that driver left. Even Breanna said she knows better.
“She should stop for a kid,” she said.
Breanna is in many ways lucky. She lost a permanent tooth, cut her mouth, and suffered a minor head injury. Helen knows it could have been worse, even fatal.
Now Helen hopes to find the driver that hurt her daughter, she even took a photo of the license plate of the car she says hit Breanna. Breanna hopes to find a tooth to replace the one she lost.
“My dad was teasing me when I lost it, saying all you want for Christmas is my two front teeth,” Breanna said.
Breanna is likely going to need a dental implant, since her tooth was a permanent one, but her family doesn’t know yet how they’ll pay for it.
Police say they have a lot of good tips to work with in their search for the person who hit Breanna.
