Olathe East’s James McGinnis surprised by classmates on Senior Night

OLATHE, Kan. — After spending months fighting for his life, an Olathe East senior is back home. James McGinnis was reunited with his classmates Friday night and got a huge surprise.

James missed his senior night because he was in the hospital. He thought he was coming to cheer on the team, when hundreds started cheering for him and James got his own surprise senior night.

He’s been in rehab in Nebraska after collapsing on the football field in September. Doctors found bleeding and pressure around his brain and he had to have surgery.

James’ classmates say they did this to welcome him home and let him know he was never forgotten.

“We always wanted to do something for James and the fact that he is getting this done for him tonight is a really big thing for him,” friend Chloe Ephraim said.

“He makes a big impact for our school just being in the crowd and playing football and he’s just a good kid to be around,” classmate Javion Blake said.

James is home for the weekend then he will be heading back to Nebraska for rehab. His family says they are hopeful he will be home for good very soon.
