KANSAS CITY, Mo.– A Kansas City, Mo., family is now wondering what’s next for them after their home burned just one day after moving in.
This weekend was supposed to be an exciting move for the Roberts family. On Friday they began moving from Columbia, Mo., into a house near 81st and Park to be closer to family in the Kansas City area. The Roberts have three kids and are pregnant with their fourth.
On Saturday while the Roberts were out, one of the neighbors noticed smoke coming out of the roof.
Many of their belongings were still in boxes waiting to be unpacked, but now it’s destroyed.
“My wife called and said we lost everything, so I come as soon as I get the call,” said Montez Roberts. “The Red Cross gave us two nights in a hotel until we can get back on our feets, but we don’t know what we are going to do from there.”
All of their belongings either burned or damaged from the smoke and water.
“There looks like there are a few things that can be saved but other than that everything is gone,” Roberts said.
The family tells FOX 4 that the fire department says it all started with their furnace. A furnace that sits in the front yard of the home now, but it’s the red tag that is the alarming factor. A tag that was placed there back in 2012.
“They told my wife that it was red tagged and that it shouldn’t have been on.”
