KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dozens of volunteers placed wreaths out Saturday for the holidays, but the reason goes beyond decorating.

Young members of the Civil Air Patrol Platte Valley Composite Squadron spent their Saturday honoring fallen veterans. They placed hundreds of wreaths on headstones as part of the Wreaths Across America event.

FOX 4 spoke with cadets who said this gesture is to remind the family members of fallen soldiers, that they’re loved one’s sacrifice is not forgotten, especially during the holidays.

“It means respect to me. It means that we’re doing something that means a lot to the families,” said Cadet Abigayle White.

Cadet Commander Matt Robbins said, “I feel amazing to be able to make this sort of impact, how we’re able to respect what these veterans have done. You can’t really put words to it.”

Volunteers are expected to place 725,000 wreaths on headstones Saturday, at Arlington National Cemetery and about 900 other places across the U.S.
