KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A homeowner was shocked to learn about a body found in the garage of his rental home on New Jersey Avenue. Police have identified the body as that of 53-year-old Lawrence Muirhead, a trucker who vanished last October.

Muirhead is now considered a homicide victim, but police aren’t saying much else other than where he was found, in a freezer in the garage. Police say he was shot before he was placed in the freezer.

“Yes, I own the house, but had no knowledge of the freezer in any part of the garage at all,” Don Moore said.

Moore owns the home, which he rented to a mother and her child. He said the family moved in the last week of October and there was no freezer in the garage when he rented it.

“I’m hearing that it was from someone else they knew that brought the freezer over. It was locked,” Moore said.

Moore said off-camera that he spoke to his tenant and her sister, who told him a male friend brought the locked freezer over sometime after the woman moved in. That man claimed he lost the key. Moore said the renter told him she finally pried the door open to find Muirhead’s body.

“There are no words for describing this, you know. It is just so way out there,” Muirhead’s mother said in a phone interview.

She did not want us to give her name, but she was more than happy to talk about her son. She said he graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in engineering, but went into the bodybuilding and gym business. Three years ago, he and his wife started a trucking company, TNT Logistics, which they ran out of their home.

“I am a very old lady by now and I never thought anything would ever happen to any of us. Anything remotely like this,” Muirhead’s mother said.

Muirhead leaves behind a wife and four children. Police will not say if they have identified a suspect in this case.
