Passenger killed in wrong-way crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Interstate 70 was shut down for several hours after a semi-truck struck a vehicle head-on, killing one person and injuring another late Friday night.

Police said around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, a 32-year-old female was driving a silver Chevrolet Malibu when she entered I-70 using an exit ramp near 40 Highway. She, along with her 35-year-old male passenger, Karl Silvey, were traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-70 when a semi-truck traveling east struck the Malibu head-on. The driver of the semi stated to police that he was unable to avoid the collision.

The front end of the silver Malibu suffered heavy damage. Silvey was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman who was driving the vehicle was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The driver of the semi was uninjured. Police said it appears alcohol may have been a factor in this case.

The interstate was closed for four hours early Saturday morning following the accident. Police have not released the name of the female driver.
