BELTON, Mo. — A teacher in Belton, Mo. got a big surprise from a grandmother who is thankful that he taught her grandson  how to read.

Justine Shull said her grandson enrolled in the Belton alternative program “BOSCO” four years ago.

“BOSCO has done wonder,” Shull said. “He’s been here for almost four years. He’s got up on his grade level. He maintains high-levels of grading. He’s trying to participate. He’s learning socialization. He’s having friends.”

Shull said her grandson’s success with reading is credited to director and teacher David Musgrave, who left his corporate job ten years ago to teach.

“David Musgrave has been there since day one,” Shull said. “He has done the most for Cory, my grandson, and he is always available. He’s helped extra. He goes above and beyond, and he’s well deserving of it.”

Shull said she wanted a way to pay back Musgrave, which is why she nominated him for FOX 4’s Pay it Forward. Shull said she wants Musgrave to use the $300 to help pay for playground equipment for the school.

Musgrave was surprised during a school assembly when FOX 4 and Shull showed up to present him with the $300.

“We don’t do this because this is a job, Musgrave said. “We do this because this is what we love. I get to come to a place that I love to come to every day.”
