GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — A pilot was seriously hurt and a single-engine plane was heavily damaged in a crash Tuesday afternoon. The Grain Valley Police Department says the crash happened at about 2 p.m. at East Kansas City Airport.
A news release said that the pilot crash while attempting to land, but police at the scene told FOX 4 that the pilot had just taken off and was about 100 feet off the ground when a gust of wind caused the plane to lose altitude. The plane then crashed at the end of the runway.
Federal Aviation Administration records indicate the plane is a fixed wing single-engine aircraft with a Viking 110 engine. It’s classified as an experimental and amateur built plane. The registered owner lives in Mayview, Mo., which is in Lafayette County.
The pilot was the only occupant of the plane and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The FAA has been dispatched to investigate the crash.
FOX 4 has a crew at the scene and we will update this story with more information as it is confirmed. Refresh this page for updates.
