LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Police are investigating after a small plane crashes in an area park.
On Sunday shortly before 6 p.m. officers were called to a reported plane crash in Legacy Park in Lee’s Summit. The plane, a Cessna 210, ended up in the 9800 block of Windsor, which is just north of the baseball field on the eastern edge of the park.
Lee’s Summit Fire took the pilot and the passenger, both men in their late 20’s or early 30’s, to an area hospital. The pilot had minor injuries, and the passenger was seriously injured.
The plane landed just yards from a Lee’s Summit home, and the woman who lives there was thankful that it wasn’t any worse.
Kay Paulsen lives just down the street from where the crash happened. She walked over afterward to see what happened. She says she and her husband often hear planes overhead because Lee’s Summit Airport is four miles from her home. They said they didn’t hear the plane crash but did hear sirens.
“I’m glad that they were able to land in area that had quite a bit of open space. Power lines are right here, which probably was a danger to the pilot as well. It’s kind of scary thinking how close it is to our homes,” said Paulsen.
According to a flight tracker website it appears the plane took off early Sunday from Jacksonville, Florida. It is unknown what the plane’s final destination was. Lee’s Summit police stayed on the scene overnight until FAA investigators were able to get there on Monday morning.
