Police ramp up patrols to bust drunk drivers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police say that Saint Patrick’s Day tends to be worse than New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July when it comes to drunk driving. Add the Big 12 Championship to the mix and that means thousands more are in Kansas City drinking and celebrating.

Police will be on the lookout for drunk drivers beginning Thursday through Sunday.
They’ll be setting up extra checkpoints throughout the weekend. Last year on St. Patrick’s day, a checkpoint at 39th and Southwest Trafficway resulted in 31 arrests for DUIs between the hours of 10 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday.

This year, police are also teaming up with the Missouri Coalition for roadway safety to promote the message that “buzzed driving is drunk driving.”

Police warn that those caught driving under the influence will face fines and possibly jail time.
