Potential USA win turns to utter disappointment as Portugal ties game in final seconds

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Capturing every celebration, chant and rant of Sunday night’s big World Cup game was FOX 4’s Katie Banks.

She spent the evening at the biggest watch party in Kansas City: the Power and Light District.

At KC Live, the USA versus Portugal game was filled with hours of chants, screams and American pride.

The crowd’s energy was undeniable, but it wasn’t enough to push Team USA to a win, as they ended their big matchup in a tie.

“It’s a really disappointing minute,” said Team USA fan Rebecca Jacobs. “But I’m just glad we didn’t completely lose.”

Added her friend, Megan Ryan, “The mood out here, it was so amped. Everyone was going crazy then all of a sudden, it just died down.”

With their heads held low and disbelief in their eyes, it wasn’t the ending these soccer fans were hoping for.

“I’m stunned,” said Nate Hornung. “Ten seconds left. I thought we had it. It’s really disappointing.”

It was an anticlimactic moment to top off an otherwise crazy, crowded, beer-soaked day.

“I’m pretty tired,” Hornung said. “It was super hype. I was excited to come out here. It was crazy, the two goals. The place went nuts. It was fun.”

But like any good sports fan, most have an optimistic look ahead.

“It’s okay,” said Ryan. “We got Thursday. We got Germany. We got that.”
