Residents of Belton Mobile Home Recovering from Sunday Storm Damage

BELTON, Mo. — Weekend storms didn’t leave without making its mark on some neighborhoods.

Residents in one Cass County mobile home park got a real scare.

Sunday night’s affair was a scary affair for people living in the Oak Hill Mobile Home Park in Belton. As that storm blew through with heavy rain and wind, it left damage in its path.

April Sheeley is a mother of two, and has lived in the community with her children since April. She says it was around 11 o’clock Sunday night when a big flash of lightning hit a large oak tree near their trailer. A huge limb fell from that tree and landed on the ground mere feet from where her children were sleeping in their bedroom.

“We heard a big ole crash and it was the tree laying across the street,” Sheeley said.

Sheeley says she can’t forget the sound and sight. When she stepped out of her trailer, she found a huge limb from that oak tree stretching from one edge of her side street to another.

“I don’t even know if I can pick it up,” Sheeley said, while straining to lift the wood. “It was kind of scary because my kids were in there sleeping in that room.”

Brian Moreno, who manages the mobile home park, says he used a chainsaw to cut the big limb into two pieces in order to clear the road.

Two doors up from Sheeley’s trailer, Gabriel Martinez was hard at work. He told FOX 4 News all of his damage was done on Sunday night.

Martinez says the storm did damage to his trailer, breaking a window and ruining some of the aluminum siding.

“It pushed the window,” Martinez said. “We got a new window.”

The only upside of the storm damage in the mobile home park is that it might be a worst-case scenario for the occasion. A dispatcher for the Belton Police Department told FOX 4 News his officers didn’t work any extraordinary damage, and that’s a surprise, given that the storm was quite strong.

Moreno says no other residents in the mobile home park experienced damage to their homes. He says he’ll clean up the rest of the fallen tree limb soon.
