JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — An investigation into what was termed an ‘unattended death’ evolved into a homicide investigation and a man has been arrested and charged as a result. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased body as 22-year-old Jordan MacDonald. Prosecutor’s charged 31-year-old Dustin Maynard with first-degree murder on Saturday in connection with MacDonald’s death.
The investigation initially focused on the crime scene at 8500 Ottawa Street and JT’s Grill and Sports Bar. MacDonald worked at the bar and Maynard was reportedly celebrating his birthday there on Tuesday night before the alleged homicide. Maynard lived in an apartment complex on the 8500 block of Ottawa St. where MacDonald’s body was found on Wednesday.
Maynard was arrested on Friday night at 6 p.m and is currently being held in detention on a $1,000,000 bond. JT’s Grill and Sports Bar waitress Katie Lee was surprised by the arrest because MacDonald and Maynard were thought to be on amicable terms.
“My personal initial reaction to this is how could a friend do this to you?” Lee said.
Lee also said that many are saddened by MacDonald’s death and while the confusion lingers, she hopes the arrest leads to closure.
“He was very loved, he had lots of friends, it’s unreal the amount of support and loving thoughts from his friends,” Lee said. “We don’t have a clue why this happened, but hopefully we will and justice will be served.”
