TOPEKA, Kan. — Officials with the Kansas Department of Transportation are asking drivers to give workers in road construction zones a brake as part of National Work Zone Awareness Week.
Officials say that 11 people were killed and 553 more were injured in work zone related crashes in 2011 – with most of the fatalities being motorists.
According to KDOT, the intent of the proclamation and Work Zone Awareness Week is to remind motorists to improve safety in highway work zones by staying alert, turning on headlights, obeying posted speed limits, never changing lanes, always expecting the unexpected, minimizing distractions such as cell phone and being patient.
Last year, inattention was the leading factor in work zone crashes both nationally and in Kansas.
