LAWRENCE, Kan. — KU is one of 75 universities being investigated for how it handles reports of sexual assault. Now students are rising up calling for an end to the assaults altogether.
As part of a week dedicated to the awareness of sexual assaults, they are sharing their feelings on a giant board.
Inside the KU student union is where students have been offering suggestions on how to support victims of sexual abuse.
The question was posed by the Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity. Students offered all kinds of advice like giving victims hugs, unless they don’t want them. But the resounding message was making sure to listen to them.
”I believe that a main thing that helps is when you listen to them. If you don’t and you don’t make eye contact all those things then obviously they don’t feel like their story is wanted with other people,” said KU student Tristan.
“Just letting them know that they’re not alone if it happens, it happens to a lot of people and it’s not ok,” said KU Student Dainera.
Several other women declined FOX 4’s request for an on camera interview but tell us they think the awareness week is a good thing.
FOX 4 asked them if they were satisfied with the university’s police for handling sexual assault and were told they weren’t really sure about the university’s policy but think this week is an appropriate time to review it.
