TRENTON, Mo. — One minute a woman was relaxing in her home and the next her roof was caving in on her, trapping her inside.
“I started praying, ‘Oh God oh God, please let this stop,” said Karen Bailey.
She took cover under a table in her kitchen and started yelling for her husband.
“I was downstairs and all the sudden I looked at the lake and the water was sucking clear out that lake,” said Larry Bailey.
The tornado touched down and hit their home, part of the roof started caving in and glass shattered around her. Larry tried to get upstairs, but the stairs were blocked with debris and he began to fear the worst.
“I didn’t know…,” Larry said with tears welling up in his eyes.
A few minutes later the crashing stopped and Larry was able to reach his wife.
“We just grabbed each other and then we started looking around and screaming,” said Larry.
What was their home for 20 years was unrecognizable and the only one in their area to be severely damaged. They started cleaning up, but soon realized they weren’t alone.
“People just started walking up,” said Karen.
Dozens stopped off the highway to help. Some were family, some were friends and also some strangers stopped by.
“That kept us together. All the people kept us together,” said Karen.
Their home is a total loss, but luckily the couple was insured and will stay with family until they figure out their living arrangements.
