INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A water main break has left a stretch of 23rd Street closed in Independence, and left several businesses along the road with water and mud damage.

The break has closed both east-and west-bound lanes of 23rd Street between R.D. Mize Road and 291 Highway.

Officials say that there is a chance that a portion of the road may collapse due to the water main break, which sent mud and water into some neighboring businesses.

According to officials, the age of the pipe and soil conditions may have led to the break of the 12-inch water main. Officials say that they hope to have water service restored to the area by Tuesday evening, but the road may not be ready to reopen until late Tuesday night.
