SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah judge says a woman accused of leaving her newborn baby in a trash can near Salt Lake City is not mentally competent to stand trial.
Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills said Monday that 23-year-old Alicia Englert will enter treatment to get help and set a June hearing to reassess her competency.
Court documents show Englert gave birth in a bathroom at home in August and abandoned the infant. Prosecutors say the baby girl would have died if she wasn’t found by a neighbor.
The child recovered and is being adopted.
Englert has not entered a plea to an attempted murder charge.
Lawyer Josie Brumfield says Englert’s IQ was too low for her to stand trial.
Attorney Jessica Peterson, representing Englert’s parents, said the woman didn’t know what she was doing.
