HIGH POINT, N.C. – Police believe a driver who crossed over into oncoming traffic may have been posting to Facebook before she fatally crashed her vehicle.
According to FOX 4’s sister station, WGHP FOX 8 in North Carolina, 32-year-old Courtney Ann Sanford was driving northbound on Business 85 when she crossed her 2005 Toyota Corolla over the median and into oncoming southbound traffic, striking a recycling truck head-on. According to police, the impact was estimated to have occurred at around 45 miles per hour.
The truck driver she hit, 73-year-old John Wallace Thompson, was not injured, however his vehicle did veer off the road and hit a tree. Sanford’s vehicle caught fire following the accident, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, although friends and family of Sanford informed investigators she had posted to Facebook right around the time of the incident. Authorities later determined the crash happened within seconds of Sanford’s post.
According to WGHP, investigators said Sanford’s Facebook post read: “The happy song makes me HAPPY!”
They also traced back Sanford’s other online activity and discovered she had been posting selfies as she drove down the road as well.
