KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Authorities say that the Kansas City Chiefs knew that the relationship between linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins was troubled, and tried to provide counseling to help the couple.
Belcher, 25, shot and killed Perkins, 22, at their Kansas City home on Saturday morning, then drove to the Chiefs’ practice facility at the Truman Sports Complex where he shot and killed himself in front of head coach Romeo Crennel, general manager Scott Pioli and linebackers coach Gary Gibbs.
According to the Kansas City Star, Kansas City Missouri Police say that Belcher and Perkins had been arguing over relationship and money matters, and that the team had been trying to help them.
The couple had a 3-month-old baby girl, who is now in the temporary custody of Belcher’s mother.

Investigators told the Star that they believe Belcher killed himself because he was distraught after shooting and killing Perkins.
“He cared about her,” said KCPD spokesman Sgt. Richard Sharp. “I don’t think he could live with himself.”
