DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A massive wreck sent tire and engine parts hurling into the grandstand, sending many NASCAR fans to hospital Saturday during the Nationwide Series race at the Daytona International Speedway.
At least 28 people were injured in the incident.
The speedway’s president said 14 fans were treated on site and 14 were taken to local hospitals, including an adult who underwent surgery to treat a life-threatening head trauma and a 14-year-old who is in critical condition.
Twelve cars were involved in the accident. Driver Kyle Larson’s No. 32 Chevy was torn in half as it sailed into the outside wall while nearing the start-finish line. The car’s engine was thrown through the safety fence, tearing a gaping hole in it.
NASCAR veteran Tony Stewart drove to victory in his No. 33 Chevrolet as other race cars banged off the wall and each other.
Track officials say the speedway will be repaired in time for Sunday’s Daytona 500. The green flag is set to wave at 12 Noon. Coverage of the race starts at 10:30 a.m. on FOX 4.
